"I'm proud that everything I have I earned all on my own."
Building Together Again
Occupy a Better Future
Don't forget about the price tag
We are all connected
Nickel and diming our lives
Hearing and saying "I appreciate you."
The purpose of technology is community
Celebrate small moments
Thankful for people
The strength around us
The leaf is proud:
a tribute to helping each other

Cleaning the workbench:
Children become adults

No power tonight:
Quieting a busy life

Help someone
today

"The things we want are really the times we share."

"If I had only one thing I would take a smile over an iPad."

Going through life on an angle

One of my favorite people is a friend who challenges himself in many fun and interesting ways. Whether it is acting on the local stage, shooting video, or leaning into the wind on a motorcycle or sailboat, this is a person who participates in life. He is also a very caring person, and works as the videographer for a hospital — a role in which he sees many of the poignant and challenging moments of family and personal life. He takes people’s concerns very seriously, but is also quick with a smile. He cares about people and knows that being [...]

Rings around the rosey

September 24, 2009

Every child fortunate enough to learn about our solar system has been amazed by the rings of Saturn. Dusty rings encircling a planet is a strangeness exactly out of this world — very alien, and very isolated. Recent photographs of Saturn and its rings were taken by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, and published by The Smithsonian Magazine. They show more extensive rings than have been seen before, with many amazing patterns reaching out and circling back around. But while Saturn and its rings stand as a marvel, it stands as a lonely marvel, separated by millions of miles from its nearest [...]

Being the gears instead of giving them

We all know what it is like to be part of our society: lots of things on the go, and ever-more things to buy. Threaded through most of the things we do are the people in our lives — our family, friends, work mates, service people and those driving by us. As a former computer programmer I know how busy life can be — full of details and endless tasks. I actually lost a few years of my life to work, before I had this simple but important revelation: People are more important than things and tasks. While I still [...]

Celebrating endless love

September 1, 2009

Today we celebrated the truly endless love of family and friendships — the love that each of us can be part of. I had the honor of helping to celebrate the life of my daughter-in-law’s grandfather. Bruce lived to be 91, and he and Ida had been married for 70 years. That is a long life of love. My daughter-in-law’s sister, Laura, is a wonderful photo archivist, and put together four big photo boards, showing Bruce’s life in hundreds of moments.  It was fascinating to see the history and younger days of the wonderful family my son has married me [...]

Willow Creek Leadership Summit a growing success

August 21, 2009

Unlike conferences that focus on making money, the Willow Creek Leadership Summit focuses on inspiring and empowering leaders. Although run by a church, the Summit is widely attended by business people and community leaders who have heard about the amazing speakers and understand the great value this conference provides. The 17 Summit speakers represented a culturally and racially diverse group of leaders from business, ministry, politics and entertainment including: Willow Creek senior paster Bill Hybels, former British PM Tony Blair, Made to Stick authors Dan Heath and Dave Heath, renowned leader and thinker Gary Hamel, and U2 leader Bono. Some [...]

Let’s get going!

August 19, 2009

Sometimes what gets done is not what really needs to be done. I always have lots of things on the go, and even more jumping off my desk. It is time to focus on the creative, vital and inspiring projects that have waited earnestly as too many moons have spun past. I am putting myself on notice: You must be active and earnest about creating the next stage of your life. We need to recognize when important things aren’t getting done, acknowledge that they are important, and make changes today to help ensure that tomorrow is a better day. Here [...]
